Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday. You can’t escape the commercials and buzz words. But at Ideas Collide, we want to highlight a special day you might not have heard of; Giving Tuesday.
We think it is incredibly important to remember this time of year is known as the season of giving for a reason. Giving Tuesday was created to bring people together from all around the world and celebrate generosity.
At IC/MC, we love this event. Throughout the year, we donate our time, energy, money and services to multiple charities including Junior Achievement, Phoenix Children’s Hospital, and Little Kids Rock. But this Giving Tuesday we want to highlight a charity close to our hearts called Healthy Packs.
Despite Scottsdale having a median income over $100,000, there are still thousands of hungry children that qualify for the Federal Program of free or reduced lunch at elementary schools. Additionally, due to a variety of circumstances, many of those children don’t have enough food to eat on the weekends.
That’s where Healthy Packs comes in. Teachers and parents came up with the idea of distributing weekend packs of healthy food for students that qualify for free and reduced lunch. For many children the only reliable source of nutritious food they get is their school lunch.
A teacher in Mesa commented on that community’s weekend backpack program saying, “Not only are the students more excited to come to school, but they have more energy and are not as sad.”
This Giving Tuesday, consider giving just a small portion of your shopping budget, or of your Black Friday savings to Healthy Packs. A donation of just $25 sponsors a child with weekend meals for a month. A donation of $100 sponsors a child for a semester. A $200 donation sponsors a child for a year. 100% of donations to Healthy Packs are used to feed hungry children.
