With more than 150 million active users, Instagram is one of the fastest growing social media apps. Sharing images with family and friends is not only fun, it creates a sense of community. Big name brands like Nike, Starbucks and Nordstrom have been hopping on board to master the social network.
TrackMaven, a competitive analysis firm, recently released a report to try and decipher how brands use Instagram. They took the 2013 Fortune 500 list and input all of the Instagram handles for every brand into their platform, a total of 123. They analyzed the number of interactions, posting times and other information, such as popular filters used, through the brands Instagram feed history.
Here is what they found-
Use Multiple Hashtags
While it’s considered bad etiquette Twitter and Facebook to use more than two hashtags, with Instagram that doesn’t hold. The information shows that for brands, four to 11 hashtags can increase up to an average 77 interactions per posting. However, they should be added into your caption, don’t just add a bunch at the end #itsannoying. A great way to effectively use a hashtag is to keep it keyword minded. Hashtags are Instagram’s only search engine, so if you don’t tag your content with relative tags, there is no way for users who don’t follow you to find your post.
Instagram Videos are Effective
Videos are effective because they allow users to devour content quickly. On average, a video on Instagram can get up to 24 interactions. This is slightly less than pictures, in terms of interactions, however Instagram videos were introduced this summer so this number is expected to rise. By taking your marketing a step further by incorporating videos, you have an extra advantage with your followers. The best time to post Instagram videos were off-hours from 9:00 p.m. until 8:00 a.m. ET
The most popular filter is #nofilter
Which filter gets the most interactions? No filter at all! The posts with the hashtag #nofilter were used the most and performed the best by Fortune 500 companies with the filter Mayfair coming in second.
There is no best day to post
Usually you can find the best time to post on social networks by using analytic software and through a bit of trial and error. But with Instagram, people interact all time, 24hours a day users are engaging with content. Posting at different times of the day ensures an advantage for different audiences.
Whether you’re a business to business company or a business to consumer company, you can use Instagram successfully. Beyond pictures of kittens and lattes, Instagram is a great place to show off your brand and your unique company culture.
Remember, marketing is what you do and branding is who you are. Thanks to Instagram we’re all photographers with the right filters to make what we do look awesome.
